Panic has swept through Southern Indiana looking for a six year old girl named Hannah Wahlman. Hannah is reported to be with her mother, Rachel King, but hasn't contacted family since Monday at 10am.

Family being concerned and contacted the authorities who felt it was best to request an Amber Alert - however I've been unable to located any such alert anywhere at anytime.

The Plain Dealer-Sun (newspaper - in North Vernon) reports "An Amber Alert was issued Wednesday afternoon for a 6-year-old Jennings County girl." then later says... "Jennings County Sheriff Steve Hoppock requested the alert for Hannah Wahlman."

The paper says "Hannah was last seen with her mother, Rachel King Wahlman, who was driving a dark green Chevrolet Monte Carlo with Indiana plates."

The paper further says...

"The little girl's family is concerned since they haven't heard from them," noted Maj. Jerry Shepherd of the Jennings County Sheriff's Department. "Mom has been known to be despondent in the past and we are just concerned for the little girl's safety."

I looked up what despondent means according to Google... "In low spirits from loss of hope or courage." or in other words DEPRESSED.

I don't know what the deal is, I don't think it is a crime to not talk to your family and if no kidnapping occured abusing the Amber Alert system shouldn't be tolerated.

There are detailed criteria for issuing an Amber Alert - it's not done just because family or even local LE requests one.

Here's the link: http://www.amberalert.gov/guidelines.htm

Its the girls Father (and his family) who are concerned that they cannot reach her. And, if the mother is keeping the little girl away from the father without legal cause then yes she is committing a crime

No If the mother is keeping he child and the courts issued custody to the father then it is a civil issue not criminal. Learn the law before you preach it.

I hope the little girl is found safe. I hope you never have to experience not knowing where your child is or that they are safe.

Sheriff Happock said "There was not an amber alert. ISP rejected it." so no amber alert was issued for this 6 year old - family is only thing pushing for her return. This isn't a criminal matter but a civil matter

Did a little digging around, and found that a man with the same name as the child's father was arrested and released on bond just last week. http://www.tribtown.com/view/local_story/ARRESTS-8-4-12_1344049145 For all we know, the mother could be fleeing a domestic violence situation. And she is the custodial parent, so she has a right to go wherever she wants. Unless she failed to allow court ordered visitation with the father, the mother has not violated the law. All of this sounds very fishy.
