Children unsupervised riding bike in middle of road in front of cars, oh the lessons needed

We wrote about sharing the road with fellow bikers, or scooters, but we didn't talk about how parents should teach their children the dangers of riding in the road without paying attention.

In the video you can see, first of all the truck running the stop sign, but the child on a bike weaving and cuting back n forth while riding in the middle of the road like he owns it.

The other child who follows along is on a scooter of some type again paying no attention to the large truck. If you don't teach your children now to respect the road, later when it comes time for your "teachings" to be tested, it will not only make them look like fools, but it is a reflection on the parent who allows their child to run loose.

I understand kids will be kids, but this is a blatant disregard to the rules of the road.

If these are your children, you should be so proud.

At the ages these kids appear to be, I'm afraid it's a little late to be thinking about lessons. When the training wheels came off, the training stopped.

I'd say the truck driver had some less than illustrious training and concern for others as well. Maybe he had to hurry home for his wife's pregnancy. She was conceiving.

I sure wouldn't want to ride my bike along 17th st., in the 2 or 3 bike lanes, cross in front of traffic, I wonder how many drivers out their know they have to yield to the bicylcist? Why not leave the bike lane, on the right side, and not cross ANY traffic??? I've seen it that way in other cities...

Bicyclists have always been required to follow the same rules of the road, as motorists. Since when did bicyclists get awarded "right of way"?

A sign to yield to bicyclists, which is how it is along 17th St. Over rules what it says in the book.

From the Indiana Driver's Manual:
"Drivers must routinely share the roadway with bicycles. Bicycles are entitled to the SAME right of way and are REQUIRED TO OBSERVE THE SAME TRAFFIC LAWS AS OPERATORS OF AUTOMOBILES."

So, automobiles do not have to automatically yield to bicyclists.

Angie, if there are signs saying to yield to bicyclists, then you follow the signs. So yea, automobiles DO HAVE TO YIELD TO BIKES....

Your argument is not with me, Paula. It is with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Of course, drivers must follow what road signs say, but there is no "automatic right-of-way" for bicyclists, and bicyclists are not automatically regarded as pedestrians in regard to rules of the road. Bicyclists have no free pass as pedestrians do. The only exceptions are areas that are posted with signs to the contrary. Motorists must also yield to other motorists....but only when or where signing indicates...not ALWAYS, as some seem to believe regarding bicyclists. Bicyclists and motorists must follow the SAME rules of the road. I don't say this, the Indiana BMV says this. There is no debate to be had here. It is written in black and white.

Angie, I'm not arguing, just stating that along 17th street, there are 2 maybe 3 signs that tell motorists to yield to bikes..that's all. I don't know why they couldn't have made it easy, and just allow a bike lane on the right, but there are two places, where the bicyclist has to cut in front of the traffic, to stay in their lane. One of those places is right in front of the hospital, heading towards Central. The bikes have to cross in front of cars that hopefully see the "Yield to bikes" sign. I think I would want to talk to the engineer who designed this and ask him, "What were you thinking!!!"

Yes, that 's crazy to have those lanes cross traffic. Some bicyclist is going to get hurt, and some motorist is going to feel bad, and some lawyer may make a buck over it.
