Fireman's Cheer fund EVICTED - City of Columbus not a landlord

Apparently after using the organization for every available photo op on the campaign trail, the newly elected Mayor just handed the Fireman's Cheer Fund a packing slip.

Yes, you heard that right - Kristen Brown is evicting the Cheer Fund.

Why, you ask?

Well, apparently the city isn't in the landlord business when it comes to freeloaders like firefighters and poor kids.

Is she going to use the building for something else? or sell it? Why would you evict them if you didn't other plans?

No she doesn't own this building. It is owned by Columbus City Utilities. The site is being cleared since a new Waste Water Treatment Plant has been build farther south. According to Vision 20/20 this was to be the location for Columbus's new stadium. Not the outdoor sports complex sites but a seperate Minor League Stadium. Just ask the old CRC about this or go to Vision 20/20 web site.

WOW...this has been a tradition for how long now??? Not only do the kids benenfit, but the FF's really enjoy giving. What a shame.....Of course she doesn't know what it's like to do without....

Funny, where are all the folk that supported her on here, gone to???

I remember when Mayor Brown was campaigning, and hearing how all the police and FF supported her. Now, she is stopping a tradition for the FF's. Surely the CPD will still have shop with a cop. or will that be the next to go...?

Word on the street is that the Mayor has some serious problems coming from within the Columbus Fire Department. The Chief was her third pick, two others turned her down to her face. Seems she wanted to micro-manage the department down to picking every single supervisory position in the chain of command. Now, it appears she is shuddering the Cheer Fund or at least evicting them. How was this done? Where is the transparency? Where are the Swaim's with their ad-nauseum support and explanations? All we are left with is Columbuzz because we cannot trust the writers at Home News Enterprises.

What??? Problems with the Fire Deptartment?? I thought there was a good relationship there with transparency. I heard her on the radio, both CPD and the FF supported her as "their" mayor...trouble on the home front??? Surely you jest!!!!!

oh wow, I can't even comprehend how wrong this post is... It boggles the mind.

The only guy who was offered the job, accepted the offer (even if it was only temporary).

I've already heard the rumor that ONE person turned down the job offer and it was dispelled. This is the first time I've hear that TWO people we're offered the job and turned her down. I can only guess you just made it up.

She is not shuddering or evicting them. When the Cheer Fund received permission to use the building, they knew that it was only a temporary thing.

If this is truly the "first time" you heard this then you are truly outside the loop.

Explain this. You "guess" that I "made it up?"

You guess because you don't know.

Stick to what you do know and I will help fill in the blanks for you.

I have the names, have spoken to them personally. There is no reason for them to lie but there are a lot of reasons a "fireguy" who supports the Mayor would spin this story. Chief Cleland was her THIRD choice. Two others, TWO, DECLINED to become the Chief. Period.

I'm not spinning the "story". If I was I would take your rumors and try to make them sound good for the mayor.

In fact, I'm not trying to make your rumors sound good at all. Spinning a story, and trying to contradict them are two different things.

So says you fireguy. I believe these men, both veterans of the Columbus Fire Department and both of whom supported THIS mayor during the campaign.

Ole Kristen is not staying away from Columbuzz because of rumors, she is staying away because it's the truth and she knows it. The truth is always the truth, spin away,

Cleland was choice #3 and his position is not permanent at that.

Toolman, don't hold your breath too long....this site is notorious to print stories, that are not in full. take the gun story for example. Printing three different stories, and the paper has even a differing story LOL...That's the buzz for ya, print just enough to let people stir the pot, without the facts!! I will say though that is the best part about the Buzz, they let people speak about whatever!!

Have a great day toolman!

You're right Toolman. This is a load of crap. Way to cause the fire department to deal with your ticky-tack b.s. instead of doing their actual jobs. If you want to know the REAL story, try going to a website that employs reporters and fact finders. WCSI has all the details without the sensationalism. http://wcsi.whiterivernews.com/templates/localnews_temp.asp?id=4446&storyno=1

Had the Mayor been forthright and public with "unprecedented transparency" like we were promised, all of this could have been avoided. The Mayor needs a PR person or someone to communicate with the media besides leaving up to the public to guess what in the hell she is doing.

Oh come on! No matter what Mayor Brown says or does, people like you are going to bash her regardless. Besides, this was never really a news story until someone started putting out unsubstantiated rumors. She's been on the job 27 days! Most Presidents don't even get a "public report card" of some sort until their first 100 days in office.

And folks like you will defend her regardless of what she does. It's impossible to "bash" Her Honor unless SHE provides the reason for the bashing. Period. We were promised transparency and ethics. Not sure about the ethics because, so far, there is NO TRANSPARENCY at all. That's not bashing, thats a FACT. If being held to campaign promises is bashing, you people who blindly followed this ill-prepared Mayor into City Hall are in for a rough spell. I have suggested how she can help her horrendous public relations gaffes, we shall see what happens.

Transparency doesn't necessarily mean knowing what she is doing at all times.
Has she spent millions of dollars put in the hands in private sectors to do as they please? Has she done anything that requires as such?

Should she give you her number and call and check in with you at all times?

WRONG! Mayor Armstrong's number was in the phonebook and someone from his staff responded to e-mails at almost any hour of the day. I would venture, at this point, that Armstrong's administration was both staffed and more responsive than this one.

The people elected Kristen Brown, not Fred Armstrong. Give the administration atleast 100 days to a half year before we start to gauge her effectiveness. At the end of her term, we can ask ourselves whether we are happy with her reforms and policies or whether we want to go in a different direction.

Phil, I agree that we need to give her time before we judge. She hasn't had enough time to get organized, much less see results of her decisions. I think she needs someone, or herself, to explain when things come up like not showing at the NAACP dinner.

As busy as everyone expects her to be to solve the ills of Columbus, I'm surprised anyone expects her to go to ANY meetings.

When people attack your every move, you get tired of being around people.

Look at Mayor Armstrongs car.

Mayor Brown decided to use her own car instead of an official car. Some thought that was wrong.

She decided to sell it on Ebay. Some thought that was wrong.

She decided to use the money from the sale to buy ice rescue equipment.Someone actually told me they thought that was a waste because it's always a rescue in ice emergencies. That is simply not true.
If that equipment saves one life, it is worth it.

It doesn't matter what she does, someone complains. We should give her time.

Bob, ol' buddy, I appreciate your own patience and willingness to reserve judgement. But I will (as gently as possible) remind you that you were among those assuring us that a Harvard MBA and extensive experience made Kristen ready to perform brilliantly in this position.

Mary's point, however, is worth noting. Yes, Kristen was only "sworn in" 30 days ago. But she was elected 83 days ago, she officially spent nearly a year running for the office, and more than a year before that positioning herself (in collusion with HNE) with a pre-campaign campaign.

No one held a gun to her head and made her run. I mean, really, how much more time does poor Ms Brown need before her actions are open to comment or criticism?

Why? Why give her 100 days - she has actually had close to that now - since she was elected. Why give her 100 days when she made many, many promises - has she kept one - I don't think so. Why give her 100 days when she has cut off any contact with the minority community in this town. Why give her 100 days when instead of transparency all we see are more and more walls going up. Again, I ask why? And, Phil - let her speak for herself instead of hiding from the citizens. She hasn't been at anything where she would have contact with us, except city council meetings, on tv with the fire department, etc. I guess if we want to see her we have to go to city council meetings - she can't hide there.

On observation from the campaign is that Mayor Brown is not the best public speaker. I noticed this time and again as she stammered around frequently seeming to have difficulty stringing a sentence together. That's not hating either, it's just a fact. Now that she does not have Boris and Paul to make her look good every single minute of every single day, she may want to hire a communicator. Perhaps an Executive Assistant or someone on staff who is a P.R. person and can write press releases.

The Mayor has an obligation to communicate with the public about what she is doing and a lot of this hand wringing and rumor-mongering would go away with someone addressing the issues in a timely manner.

well after all, transparency was a biggie on her list....I;m surprised she's not good on public speaking. In her many high profile jobs, did she never have to do a presentation of some sort??? We need a mayor who is comfortable speaking to the public; one who knows how to communicate...did they not have public speaking in her curriculum at Harvard??? I spoke in front of about 2500 people and in front of major net works, MSNBC CNN< FOX NEWS and local news, and even I could communicate wo getting tongue tied....C'mon Mayor Brown, just put your heart into your messages...but fact check first.

OK so I went to WCSI website - and they aren't being evicted and the Cheer Fund continues - good news. But, all of this could have been avoided if the transparency we kept hearing about actually was taking place. Mayor Brown does need someone to help her maneuver through the mine fields. If she keeps depending on Lapdog and Misinformation, she is in big trouble. And, I too, wonder what the city is doing with the building - if it remains empty - why can't the Cheer Fund stay there until another paying tenant is found? As for the information provided by Mike Wilson - good job, Mike! We all need to be careful of what we say - many of us have friends and family working for the city and no one wants anyone to get into trouble for what they might say.

Well, I guess I learned something today. I thought if you had a home and the management was tossing you out, then that was called "eviction." Turns out you're not being "evicted" -- you are instead engaging in "rumor-mongering."

I would strongly urge readers to NOT be lulled into an easy complacency by this rather bizarre news-spin. The charitable organization that exists for "Remembering the needy & underprivileged children at Christmas," needs to be remembered by all of us today.

Please join me in sending a message today to the new Mayor. Tell Kristen Brown to reverse her position and continue the community support we have always shown to this great program!

That building was never a home for the Cheer Fund. If it was a home, it would be owned by the Cheer Fund. If you sign a 1 year contract with an apartment complex and the complex decides to not renew it the next year, it's not called an eviction...

Seems to me, most of you are more worried about making the Mayor look bad, rather then trying to help the Cheer Fund. I hope the latter is true, and if it is, I challenge you all to donate money to the Cheer Fund so that they can buy their own building. That way they will never have to worry about finding a building every year.

I would rather make a donation to the actual Cheer Fund. If the building is empty, why does the city have to ask the Cheer Fund to leave? Is this the most important item on her agenda - what about appointments, staff, making sure no letters to the editor include anything bad about her. Just saying.........

I got the impression the Cheer Fund isn't going anywhere, but they do need the space. I was upset when I was led to believe no more cheer fund, while, it still will exist, but where. Like Firegy said, if we donate directly to them, let them be accountable, and let them find the space they need.

I was chided last time I asked a question, but has the car sold yet?? And why do they have a deadline for it?? Like I thought Tues night was the last night to make a bid....I thought someone on STAT was experienced in water rescues? Ice rescues...hope the car sells....
