Guests at the Corner Hobnob restaurant in Nashville, Indiana are greeted with nostalgic atmosphere that takes them back to the turn of the 19th century and beyond. The floors are orginal. Gaping holes have been patched in days of yore by stips of riveted sheet metal.

The structure was built in 1873 to house Frank Taggart's dry goods and grocery store. We can only image the items once stocked on the shelves. In 1899 the store became a corner drugstore and in 1973 it became Hobnob Corner, a rustic restaurant with a medium-priced menu.

What you can expect at the Hobnob is home-style cooking, at least when compared to food served by the national chain stores. Management likes to boast of it's pastries and extensive wine list.

Prices on the dinner menu range from about $10 to $15. The sandwiches, which come with a side of fries, are priced under $10. The only exception is an open faced beef sandwich that will set you back about $13.

My request for a take home menu was met with a cocked head stare as if I were from Mars (then again, maybe it was the fact that I hadn't shaved in two days.) Sadly, the Hobnob Corner has no paper menus to take home.

The french fries that came with my standard tenderloin were hand cut and cooked to perfection. The tenderloin, on the other hand, should be called a fritter. It was flat, overcooked and had the texture of shoe leather (not that I've actually eaten shoeleather.) Tenderloins served by the nearby Gnawmart gas station and convenient store rate a point higher.

Nonetheless, the dining experience was positive. Aside from the gawdy expression that greeted me when I first entered, the service was superb. As one who chugs diet soda by the gallon, the server was careful to keep my glass filled. She earned a dollar tip for each trip to the soda fountain. I call it my 'tip per trip' method.

The restaurant was clean and tidy. A visit to the men's room found it clean and orderly. And oderless. (Actually, there is no 'men's room;' just two doors with a sign between instructing guests to select whichever is unlocked.)

Upon exiting I took a moment to study the restaurant's hours of operation. Suffice it to say the store is open every day at various hours.

Mon 8:00am–8:00pm
Tue 8:00am–3:30pm
Wed 8:00am-8:00pm
Thu 8:00am-8:00pm
Fri 8:00am-8:30pm
Sat 8:00am-8:30pm
Sun 8:00am–7:30pm

If you're looking for an inexpensive and curious dining experience, the Hobnob Corner is recommended. The tenderloin, however, is not.

Location: Corner of Main St. and S. Van Buren (17 W Main St) in Nashville, Indiana.

My score for the Hobnob Corner:

Service: 20

Food: 15

Cleanliness: 20

Atmosphere: 20

Value: 20

Total Score: 95 out of 100
