Happy Thanksgiving! How about the Homeless?

As we sit in our homes tomorrow and enjoy the great food with great family, let's stop and think a bit about those who are on the street this holiday season.

I love Thanksgiving! Great food, and great times with the family.

I usually hope for an inch or two of snow for the day, but often, like this year, I am disappointed.

But, the cold is coming. It helps to make the day what it is.

I can enjoy the weather as much or as little as I wish. I simply go in the house, in front of the fireplace, when I'm cold.

Many others aren't so lucky.

Homeless folks must endure the cold 24/7. Oh, they can come in long enough to get a meal once a day in this town. But the other 23 hours, they must endure.

Contrary to popular belief, we DO have homeless people in Columbus, Indiana. Wishing we didn't doesn't make them go away.

Now, before panties get all wadded up, let me say, we have many many people in this town that DO help the homeless. But they can't help them all. They can't keep them all off the street.

One of my new friends suggested a new project the other day. She would like to go out and find homeless folks and give them blankets or any other help we might be able to give.

My friends and I can't solve the problem. Giving them blankets and coats won't bring them off the street. It will not heal all their ills. But it might just keep someone from freezing to death. It might just ease their misery a little bit.

Columbuzz has grown its readership quite a bit in the past two years. We now have ten times the readers we once had. I thought this might be a good way to help.

I'd like to start collecting blankets and coats that we can give out to the homeless this winter.

If you have any blankets, coats, or anything that you would like to contribute to the cause, please contact us and I will gladly come by and pick them up. Any and all cash donations will be used to purchase blankets.

If you prefer, you can drop them off at my house at 3225 Lilac Ct.

Nobody needs to know your name, but if you'd like, we can list it here to let folks know that you contributed.

My cell number is 317-402-2244. Call me anytime.

Please.

Yes we do and do you know the number of them who CHOOSE to be "Homeless", many can be "Homeless" just because they stay with friends and don't necessarily mean they sleep in the streets. The ones who don't choose this lifestyle are the children, most don't know any better because this has been their life.

How can I say they choose this life? I work with families in need here in Columbus. The reality is, not being responsible makes them feel invincible. If they wanted to come in off the streets and seek help it's possible and they wouldn't end back up in the same spot after everyone invests in their future, just to see it disappear.

What does everyone have in common? Everyone wants to eat, and be warm! So just because you see someone who appears to be homeless in our minds doesn't mean they themselves think of it as "homeless", but rather their choice of freedom.

Some people DO choose to live that way. But they still get cold. They can still use a blanket and/or a coat....

And those that choose to live like that are in the minority.

We aren't talking about going door to door and asking if anyone is homeless. We intend to go out and find folks living on the street.

Response has been good. We have received a few calls.
