He alleged that he was with someone, however when the woman whom he was using as an alibi was questioned she stated that he left her home at 1:00 am and returned at 6:00 am.

She also stated he had been drinking heavily. Though I am in NO way a C. Cook advocate here is something to take into consideration.

Did Amber know her new man was a violent sexual predator? Did Clifton learn this and fear for her safety?

Now... I am guessing but the charge of murder may have more to do with preventing him from having an ability to post bond than it has to do with an ability to make that charge stick. This seems more like a Voluntary Manslaughter case.
