Kristen Brown Smacks Volunteer Fire Fighters

image

You may have read the recent string of stories in The Republic demonstrating the emerging series of problems with Mayor Kristen Brown's recent ambulance service proposals.  But if you haven't read below the fold, you're missing an intersting second part of the story.  The Mayor, known to rile at any opposition, has taken to Facebook to spit in the eye of her plan's detractors.

"The volunteer chiefs don't understand the city's requirements for ambulance service," Brown posted in a recent reply to a Republic article entitled "Fire chiefs urge city to stick with hospital's ambulances."  Brown's comments came in response to Volunteer County Fire Chief's Association President Ed Johnson and Vice President Rodney Ferrenburg, who pointed out first that any attempt to make non-emergency runs could over-stress the performance of ambulance service if ambulances were moved to be housed in fire stations, and second that locating ambulances in fire stations rendered the possibility that large portions of the county would be left unreachable in the event of a flood.

Brown was backed up in her slaps at the Fire Chiefs by frequent spokesman Phil Swaim, who questioned if Ferrenburg or Johnson have "even seen these proposals and bids by the aspoiring providers?"

Neither Brown nor Swaim, however, addressed the Fire Chiefs concerns, which centered around moving the housing of ambulance services to city fire departments.  However, the incident is another demonstration of the increasing friction between Brown's administration and those bodies of government not directly under it's control.

Awe, the Swaim bird perks up again. I am not surprised. He sees a damsel in distress! People are having a hard time understanding what it is Kristen wants because Kristen cannot articulate what she wants. As for the proposals, I doubt ANYONE saw all of them since some were turned in AFTER the Mayor's deadline but were accepted anyway even after being challenged by someone in the audience.

If I understand this correctly, the city will lease ambulances, hire civilian ambulance personnel and base this in city fire stations. The ESTIMATED start up cost is $1.4 million dollars. All one needs to do is go back in time to when the fire department operated ONE ambulance for the entire county and see how much money was collected from insurance providers and private pay customers for ambulance rides. THE CITY IS GETTING INTO A HUGE MESS so Kristen can make a point.

This Mayor has a vendetta AGAINST this community and she is here to SAVE US. If she gets her way, we will need saved for damn sure!

Volunteer Fire Fighters are heroes who have been saving lives in Bartholomew County for years. How much of the year and a half she's lived here has Kristen Brown spent dealing with emergencies, that she understands our needs so much better than them?

How sad, that the most important discussion topic is the money - not the quality of care, not the quickness that people are reached in an emergency. I hope the city has big pockets for insurance, because if they fail just one person who needs assistance quickly and because the ambulance is too far away - hell has no fury like a family member of a loved one that wasn't saved because of the time it took for an ambulance to get there or the lack of training for the responders. Columbus enjoy all the economic development success, the awards for a great city, because we have seen the last for the next four years. It makes me sad to see what is happening to our beautiful Columbus.

And the conspiracies begin. ha. They should call you paranoia101

Wrong Phil although proving a conspiracy with this bunch would be easy since everything is done in secret. How about answering the questions Phil. Why were some providers who missed the deadline allowed to submit proposals?

yeah but 5 hours 3 minutes ago
You fail to mention that despite a start up cost of 1.4 million, that fire department plan only calls for an operating loss of 300,000 or so.that means their plan will mostly pay for itself.

You are under the assumption that the loss will only be $300,000.00 What is this based on? Take a few minutes and inquire how much Columbus lost in the ambulance business with ONE ambulance under the previous administrationS. It was a hell of a lot more than $300,000.

The people of Columbus supported Mayor Armstrong and the Republican dominated City Council that held office for 16 years. They were elected and re-elected by wide margins. Kristen Brown and the present council DID NOT BEAT the previous administration in the election as the majority of the previous office holders chose not to run. My point is this, the people in this community LOVE Columbus and LOVE MOST things they way they are. Kristen was elected largely on a platform of INCREASED TRANSPARENCY, ETHICS and DISMANTLING CDI. She was NOT elected to undo everything that has been done that has made this community better. She needs to be less concerned about making a name for herself and doing what is right by the people. She was not elected to save us, she was elected to right the ship and steer a course that benefits all of us.

Roger Johnson made the rounds during the election and urged everyone to support Kristen Brown. There were not a lot of specific promises made, but a lot of generalizations that life for firefighters would be great under a Brown administration. The mayor claims this new hybrid ambulance service staffed by civilians in rented ambulances will be better than what we have now. I'm not so sure. I am also not sure what quality issues, response time issues she is talking about. To my knowledge CRH responds to every call quickly and safely and I am not aware of any standards of care issues. I think this is a made-up bunch of nonsense by the mayor and Roger Johnson to put ambulances in the fire department.

Someone needs to vet Roger Johnson. I would like to know more about his background and not just the nasty rumors about him. Is there a history with Columbus Regional Hospital? What is his history with Kristen Brown? Mitch Daniels?

Columbus Enquirer 29/06/2012 13:43:46
Phil Swaims blanket praise and doe-eyed excitement for everything this mayor does is ponderous and boring. Phil is about as objective as Karl Rove. P101, Transparency, Walter Kirtz and others seem to have a better grasp on what is really going on at city hall then Swaim does. Not everything Kristen has done has been bad. She got rid of the downtown good ole boy network, eliminated trash fees but that is where it ends. She does seem to have a vendetta against anything Armstrong and she also seems to feel a need to undo things in this city that are working just fine.

She wanted emergency als ambulance service without a subsidy which is fine as long as people pay for it. Someone is going to pay for this service whether it is through tax dollars or user fees. Nothing is free. I would like to know how much CRH has written off in bad debt for people who cannot or will not pay their ambulance bills. It's probably quite a bit. If Kristen thinks she can put the city into the ambulance business, someone is going to pay for it. It she prepared to take people to court who default on $1,000.00 or higher ambulance bills? Is she going to sue the insurance companies.

Kristen came into office on a wave of change but not, necessarily, voter discontent. Columbus voters like a LOT about this town but she seems set on change for the sake of change. I am beginning to wish I had voted for Renner in the primary. This, is honestly, not what I expected. Thanks Phil! This is the last vote you will influence!

TIRED OF KB ALREADY! 29/06/2012 17:48:26
Kristen Brown to THE REPUBLIC when she was "correcting" Larry Kleinhenz:

"WE ARE GOING IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION"

What direction are we going in? Why has this not been articulated and thoroughly researched and vetted? Where is the TRANSPARENCY and discussion we were promised. Why aren't the City Council meetings and Board of Works meetings on cable? Phil Swaim rode this bunch into city hall and now he's going to tell us who to vote for again. NO THANKS! DONE WITH SWAIM! DONE WITH KB!
