Columbus PD gets the new 2012 Chevy Caprice PPV cruiser

After a 15-year absence, the Chevy Caprice is reborn for police departments only and Columbus PD has the 9C1 Chevy Caprice PPV with the optional 6.0L V8 (which wasn't any additional charge) with 355 hp, Active Fuel. The all new Caprice is built on the same rear wheel drive Camaro and dearly-departed Pontiac G8.

The new Cruiser offers more cubic feet of interior volume than Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, Ford Police Interceptor and Dodge Charger. Its 112 cu.ft. of passenger volume translates into more leg room, so rear seat barriers can be mounted further aft to allow more seat travel and recline.

PPV’s 17.4 cu.ft. of trunk space is made even more functional by a flat load surface, available with the full size spare tire and vinyl trunk mat.

The front seats have been sculpted to "pocket" an officer's equipment belt, allowing the officer's back to rest properly on the seatback surface.

The new Columbus Police car is also equipped with an additional 600 CCA auxiliary battery Trunk-mounted auxiliary battery which is connected to the vehicle’s charging system to prevent emergency equipment electrical loads from depleting the primary 700 cca vehicle battery if the engine is not running and the ignition is OFF.

This option should save Columbus money since there won't be any need to idle the car while at restaurants or gas stations.

The cost of the car (roughly around 31K) is one thing, but the equipment that goes into the PPV cars is about the same cost if not just a little more than the car. For a total price of $60K give or take.

I still question the benefit of having every police officer driving their own, fully packaged police cruiser, gas, maintenance and insurance on our dime. Pool cars seems to make more sense during these economically challenging times. I understand State Troopers and Sheriff's Deputies having take home cars since they cover much larger areas geographically but this seems a tremendous waste of money in a town this size.

Politics 101, I think each officer having their car 24/7 is the best investment any city can make.

If we have an emergency, I don't want to wait on them to go to the station and find a car.

Cops are cops 24/7 and should be equipped as such.... In my opinion......
