Cummins helps Human Services do some work

I wonder how much Cummins would help knowing the organization wastes money on frivolous things like 15 iPads with custom cases.

On Feb. 15, the Cummins Power Generation Engineering Leadership Team completed a community involvement project with Human Services Inc. (HSI) in Columbus, Ind.

HSI is a United Way agency in Columbus and a long-time Cummins Generator Drive (G-Drive) community partner. The agency offers a variety of services to Columbus residents, such as the Head Start program; temporary housing and other services for the homeless; utility bill assistance through the Energy Assistance Program; Section 8 subsidized housing assistance; a food pantry and more.

To support this agency, 17 Cummins volunteers came together from various sites. Volunteers worked at HSI to sort donated food; prepare educational materials on the Energy Assistance Program and Section 8 housing program; and perform other administrative functions. All of this support will provide a great amount of assistance to local residents.

Joining the diverse group of volunteers was Gary Johansen, CPG Executive Director of Engineering.

“It’s important to remember that there are always people in need in our communities,” said Johansen while discussing G-Drive’s involvement with HSI. “It has been really exciting to see the relationship between G-Drive and Human Services grow and expand over the years.”

Cummins G-Drive completes several community involvement projects with HSI each year. Highlights of the projects from 2011 include the completion of a Community Impact Six Sigma project to create a child play and learning space, and a backyard rehabilitation project at Horizon House. Horizon House is a short-term family homeless shelter run by HSI.

The G-Drive team enjoys giving back to the community and is grateful for the opportunity to support HSI. While discussing Cummins' contributions over the years, HSI Director of Independent Living Sue Lamborn said, “Without the support of groups such as Cummins Power Generation, the high quality of services we offer our clients would not be possible.”
