BCSC Smith School releases child to stranger, shrugs it off as

Safety first, children need to be protected - If the taxi driver isn't on the OK list, they don't get the child. ENFORCE THE RULES!

It happened in a blink of an eye at L. Francis Smith Elementary, a child is sick and needs to go home midday. While waiting in the nurses office, her step grandfather arrives take her home.

Another child, about same age and appearance as his granddaughter was in the office for an unrelated reason.

When the step grandfather arrived, he explained I am here to pick up "****". Instead of school officials looking the child's info up, and checking the permission slip of who can or can't pick her up; it was overlooked and the girl in the office was instructed her ride was here.

(Now a bit of background... the step grandfather was to pick up girl A (the sick one), but hasn't seen his granddaughter for a long while because of family barriers, and hasn't been given permission to pick her up from school. It was in the middle of the day and no one could go and get her so her mother asked her step father to go and pick her up.

It wasn't uncommon for someone to pick up child A, the school was aware of transportation problem inside the home.

Because of the family issues the step grandfather had only seen his granddaughter 2-3 times within a 12 month period. So not knowing what his granddaughter would look like he took the child the office staff gave him.

Child B (unknown child) was in the office for an unrelated reason,  and was told her ride was here. So the child listened and left with the man.)

The scary part of the story is this, child B, who the step grandfather picked up took her child A's home has her step father being investigated by the Department of Children's Services because he had make reference to his wife that he was having sexual thoughts about step daughter - child A.

When child B, was being taken to child A's home, she said this isn't the right way to my house alerting the step grandfather something might be wrong. Once at the home he discovered it wasn't his granddaughter and rushed her back to the school where they brushed it off as "no big deal".

It most certainly is a big deal, not only did this child get taken from school; to a home being investigated for sexual misconduct, but the fact the school just handed her off to a stranger.

How did this child not know her parents didn't send someone to pick her up. We teach children to listen to school officials, and when a school official says so and so is her to take you home, why shouldn't the child believe them this is OK and safe to do.

How do the parents feel about their child being driven around town without them knowing and their child being taken to a man's home being investigated for a possible sex crime? If I had children I would be furious and something needs done to protect the children who come and go from the schools whether it be midday or during dismissal time.

This is a very scary thing, no doubt but mistakes do happen. In fact, we teach our son a special code word that the person picking them up must tell tell him if it is not one of us. School official or not, if the person doesn't use the right code word he is not to go. Period.

BCSC is a joke. Nice that we are paying taxes into a school system that really doesn't care about students. Unfortunately, there are many "we could care less" stories about BCSC. I would love to see some investigation into this so called "school system".

Wow, that was a hard read... I'd be happy to volunteer some time to do some proofreading for these articles.. they could use it.

A few years ago students at East High School taped a sex video AT THE SCHOOL!!!

Not only did BCSC brush it off, but The Republic refused to report it. One BCSC supporter publicly threatened to sue anyone who mentioned the incident as an "invasion of privacy" - even though the identity of the students involved were never mentioned.

Yes, BCSC is a joke. We need school choice!
